A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
