The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Between Rock Fans

Marking two decades after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, which was purchased by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable series which made a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game took off, album purchases airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls how the series revived classic rock to the forefront: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, younger audience. Typically such music was seen as outdated material, however when it was featured on the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album remained unreleased stateside, so the game was a key medium of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names soon capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said to have made the group more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over half a million units in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive customisation options. This track is difficult even in expert mode, not to mention played at double speed while hitting a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already completed a profitable run when their hit was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has threatened to overshadow everything else the band has done. Recently, the song was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or video games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

Most installments came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments died down, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has begun work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
