Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
